With more than 140 entries, ten events, professional TV coverage and strong partner activation, the largest Pickleball Championships ever held in Austria were successfully staged at Racket Revolution.
The 4th Austrian Pickleball Championships presented by Sport Pflug came to a successful close with a strong sporting statement and several premieres. Over three tournament days, Austrian champions were crowned in a total of ten events at the Racket Revolution venue in Wiener Neustadt – more than ever before.
Among the most successful players of the weekend were Katharina Alten and Stefan Grubmüller, who each won two titles. Alten triumphed in the women’s singles and also claimed the women’s doubles title together with Christine Seehofer-Krenn. Grubmüller won the men’s singles and also took the mixed doubles title alongside Ilvy Wagner. In addition, he won bronze in the men’s doubles together with Lars Wagner.
“I am overjoyed and proud that I was able to win two titles this year. The courts suit me well – the venue offers ideal conditions for Austrian Championships and other major events. Thank you for the excellent organization,” said Katharina Alten after her successful tournament weekend, dedicating her victories to her grandfather, who recently passed away.
Stefan Grubmüller was also pleased after winning two titles – and particularly highlighted his partners: “Above all, I am happy that I was able to play with two youngsters who only recently started playing pickleball.”
Many New Faces on the Podium
The championships impressively showed how dynamically pickleball is developing in Austria. Numerous athletes from other racket sports achieved strong results in their first or one of their first pickleball tournaments.
Leon Roider and Joachim Schemm also caused a stir by winning the men’s doubles title. For Schemm, it was his first pickleball tournament. Leon Roider additionally secured bronze in the men’s singles after facing his doubles partner. In the women’s doubles, Christine Seehofer-Krenn made a perfect debut: the outstanding racket sports athlete won the title together with Katharina Alten. Victoria Pruckner, who has only been playing pickleball sporadically for about a year, reached the women’s singles final. Ilvy Wagner completed the women’s singles podium in third place and, together with her mixed doubles gold, won two medals at her pickleball debut. Lars Wagner also reached the podium at his first tournament, winning bronze in the men’s doubles together with Grubmüller.
The 4th Austrian Championships were therefore shaped not only by established names, but also by many new faces. The results show how strongly pickleball benefits from Austria’s racket sports expertise – and how quickly players from tennis, padel or other racket sports can find their footing in this still young sport in Austria.
Strong Performances in the 50+ Events
High-level pickleball was also on display in the 50+ events. In the 50+ men’s singles, Michael Wurdits prevailed ahead of Marcel Weigl and Thomas Weis. There was a special premiere in the 50+ women’s singles, which was held at the Austrian Championships for the first time. Sandra Pribil secured the historic first title. Silver went to Maureen Tan, bronze to Angelika Gößler.
In the 50+ mixed doubles, Thomas Weis and Sandra Pribil won the title. Silver went to Helmut Hübsch and Andrea Hübsch, who reached the final at her tournament debut. Bronze went to Maureen Tan and Bernd Martin.
Helmut Hübsch also had another major success to celebrate: in addition to finishing second in mixed doubles, he won the 50+ men’s doubles title together with Yang Dai. Silver went to Thomas Weis and Bernd Martin, bronze to Gerhard Feimer and Peter Lakits.
In the 50+ women’s doubles, Maureen Tan and Doris Rothenwänder won the final against Soe Ching Ng and Sandra Pribil. Third place went to Dolores Leppich and Jo Dee Martinez.
Sport Pflug Brings Pickleball in Front of the Hall – and to You!
Pickleball was also made visible away from the matches. Presenting partner Sport Pflug generated additional attention with an activation event in front of the hall. In glorious weather, an outdoor court from PFA partner Jaykay was set up, allowing visitors to try pickleball directly.
The activation also showed how pickleball can be brought even more strongly into public spaces and to events in the future: as the PFA’s event partner, Sport Pflug now offers the rental of two competition courts. This means that sports festivals, corporate events, holiday programs and promotional activities can be professionally implemented with pickleball.
Teuton Supports All Participants
Tournament sponsor Teuton also made a strong contribution at the 4th Austrian Championships. All participants received €40 vouchers for pickleball shoes from the sporting goods manufacturer. The Austrian champions were even able to look forward to €70 vouchers; and in the raffle benefiting “She Plays Pickleball”, vouchers for two pairs of shoes were also awarded. In doing so, Teuton supported not only the champions, but the entire tournament community.
Premiere for Professional Coverage: Live and On Demand
Another milestone was the media production of the finals. For the first time, the Austrian Championships were broadcast on Streamster TV and online with professional direction and commentary. Krone TV sports presenter Martin Grasl hosted the finals day, while Andreas Mitischka and PFA President Peter Robic alternated as co-commentators. Highlights were also produced to make the best rallies and decisive moments of the tournament visible after the event. This gave the title matches a new level of public visibility and marked an important step in the media development of pickleball in Austria. The finals day is available on demand on Streamster.
Peter Robic: “A Strong Signal for Pickleball in Austria”
PFA President Peter Robic drew a very positive conclusion: “These championships were a strong signal for pickleball in Austria. We had record entries, ten events, many new faces on the podium, a fantastic atmosphere and, for the first time, a professional broadcast of our finals. This is exactly how we want to make pickleball visible: high-quality in sporting terms, open to new players and with an environment that makes people want more. A big thank you to Racket Revolution, our presenting partner Sport Pflug, all partners, volunteers and the entire community.”
The 4th Austrian Pickleball Championships presented by Sport Pflug showed that the sport continues to gain breadth, quality and visibility in Austria. Record entries, new events, strong premieres, professional coverage, strong partners and many new faces on the podium made the tournament in Wiener Neustadt an important step forward for pickleball in Austria.
